Route access to Punta del Este

North:
Route 5 from Rivera, via Tacuarembó, Durazno and Canelones, then Route 9 and Route 93.

East:
Route 8 from Melo, via Treinta y Tres and Minas, then Route 12.
Route 9 from Chuy, via Rocha and San Carlos.

West:
Route 4 from Paysandú, via San José, Canelones, then Route 9 and Route 93.
Route 2 From Fray Bentos, via Mercedes, then 1 via Montevideo, then Route 9 and Route 93.

South:
Route 1 from Colonia, via Montevideo, then Route 9 and Route 93.

Route police considerations

Maximum speed on Uruguayan roads is 90 kph.

The use of safety belts is compulsory. If so required by the authorities, drivers must submit to an alcohol test.

Driving is on the right-hand side, and it is forbidden to overtake on: upgrades, curves to the right, bridges, tunnels and railroads, wherever there is a continuous yellow line or little visibility.

The highway patrol is empowered to ask you to see your driver’s license, and if necessary to retain it and/or the vehicle’s documents, against receipt.

They are also entitled to retain vehicles if the appropriate documentation is not exhibited.
