The telephone network of Punta del Este is totally digital, and investments are made regularly to improve the infrastructure.

In general the service is very good, there is no trouble with congestion during the peak hours.

The state-owned telephone company (ANTEL), which has the monopoly for telecommunications in Uruguay, provides all necessary additional services.

When calling from a hotel please enquire about rates, as each hotel establishes its own.

The usual charge cards are available to speak from any telephone.

Should you rent a house, the meter is read upon your arrival and departure in order to charge you the correct amount.

This is normally done by the real estate agency from whom you rented.

As in other parts of the world the telephone company charges for the amount of minutes used.

The rates vary according to the time of day and day of the week (cheaper rates are from 22:00 to 08:00, and Saturdays and Sundays).

In general no long distance calls can be made from shops and other businesses except hotels, but as said before it is convenient to verify the rates before calling from a hotel.

There are prepaid telephone cards which are purchased from ANTEL which allow you to make calls from any telephone by means of a code.

In Punta del Este you'll find many public payphones on the streets, also they are found in supermarkets, bus terminals, hospitals and shops.

To make an international call it is not necessary to go through the operator.

International access is 00 plus country and city code, plus the number you are calling.

Cards and blanks are obtained from the telephone company’s various offices, and from selected shops (generally tobacconists).
