Punta del Este is a modern city in constant evolution, which reflects in the quality of its services.

During the summer, a very busy period, most businesses do not close on weekends or holidays, except for banks and public offices.

Normal business hours are from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 22:00 or even later.

Uruguayans are friendly and usually speak some English and more rarely French.

The official language is Spanish.

Facilities for the handicapped are available in most public spaces and buildings, but are practically nonexistent in private establishments.

Personal security is guaranteed everywhere and at all times of the day and night.

Occasionally there is robbery at private residences, which can be avoided by taking certain elementary precautions.

Upon arriving, do not leave money in suitcases, bags or wardrobes.

If you leave your house, leave a few lights on and leave valuable personal belongings out of sight.

There is no such problem in hotels or apart-hotels.

If you wish to drive around the city, please take into account that circulation is being modified to benefit pedestrians.

Therefore you are advised to leave your car in side streets or in car parks, as Gorlero Avenue has very heavy, slow traffic.

The accesses to Gorlero are also crowded.

Do not leave bags in your car, as they have been known to get stolen, and lock your car if you are leaving it for a while.
