General

Punta del Este is a city built on a peninsula which divides the Rio de la Plata or River Plate from the Atlantic Ocean. With over 10.000 inhabitants, it is visited by some 300.000 tourists every year. Its name originates from the expression "eastern point", which was the name of the area during colonial and revolutionary times.

 

Location

Situated to the east of Montevideo (the capital of Uruguay), Punta del Este lies 355 kilometres from Buenos Aires, and 1.745 from Sao Paulo. It possesses an international airport, a commercial airport for air taxis and privately owned aircraft, an aeronaval base and an excellent port for leisure boats at the center of the peninsula. The flight from Buenos Aires, the main provider of tourism for Punta del Este, takes 45 minutes.

 

Description

Punta del Este is the name given to the central area, which has a considerably developed touristic and commercial center located on the peninsula, and the vast residential areas surrounding it. Each residential area has its own name and characteristics, and most of them boast exceptionally beautiful mansions in very diverse styles.
