Puerto de Punta del Este

English

From the arrival of Solis (the discoverer of the River Plate) to the Bay of Maldonado on 2 February 1516, the day of the Candelaria Virgin, the port of Punta del Este was constantly fought over.

Even before the independence of the country, General Artigas, in his 1813 Instructions, noted the need to establish customs and to open the port to trade.

Nowadays the port is 100% for leisure craft, and is constantly being enlarged.

The port area is peaceful, as it is off the commercial center of Gorlero Avenue.

It is surrounded by good restaurants and pubs, seafood vendors and nautical shops.

Many interesting ocean races have stopped over at Punta del Este, among which we can mention the Whitbread Race, the Around Alone race (formerly BOC Around Alone) and the Punta del Este Offshore race.

Península

The peninsula of Punta del Este is a piece of land that divides the Rio de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean.

Gorlero Avenue divides the peninsula in half. It ends on 15th Street, and the land turns towards the east at this point.   +
