The beaches at La Barra are small, compared to their giant sisters that lie to the East.
They are particularly quiet beaches, as there are no seaside restaurants or music.
Many private residences have direct access to the beach.
The sea in this area is quite dangerous in spite of its calm appearance, due to the turbulence of the mouth of the Maldonado River.
There is a characteristic vibration of the sand under your feet when in the water due to the countercurrents caused by the breakers that appear when river meets ocean.
There are days with very low tides when you can walk across to the other side of the river, but it is a rare phenomenon.
